Based on the real-life courtship: Pakistan-born comedian Kumail and grad student Emily fall in love, but they struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail must navigate the crisis with her parents and the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.

  • It's Good.....but I was expecting more.....

I enjoyed the movie, mainly watched as I had seen the hype/good reviews and am a fan of Kumail from seeing him in "Silicon Valley". It's a heartwarming story, well acted all round, and not over saccharine, just the right amount of sweetness. I think my only problem was I hoped for more comedy. Even the stand up scenes weren't that funny. But i'm knitpicking. On the whole this is a good movie, maybe just not 98% fresh good. X
  • Disappointed

We were very much looking forward to this film to come up for rent based on the previews. "We" are a family of 5 ranging in ages from 20-82. All of us were disappointed and stopped watching it about 20 minutes in. We found the movie to be as "painful" as the one-man-show scene that bombed for the character during the movie. A groaner. :-( All 5 of us were unaminous in our experience of it.

Not a bad movie, but I don’t like the main character. He’s an unfunny nerd who plays the game for love poorly. The flashcard scene with his family was pathetic. Just walk away and let them come after YOU. Anyhow, the trailer led me to believe that Emily’s parents had a problem with Kumail being from Pakistan. It made it seem to be about race or Islamophobia. That didn’t seem to be the case. The mom disliked Kumail mainly because he had dumped her daughter (due to his family’s attitudes). He could have been white, and the mom would still have been mad with him/disliked him. With both this film and Get Out, I felt baited by the issue of race. After watching Get Out, I thought, “It’s not really about those guys being black.” Studios seem to be using race to get viewers to the cinema. Kumail’s friends and roommate couldn’t care less about his ethnicity. Indeed, NOBODY he knew seemed to care about (aside from his mother). Holly Hunter is terrific. Ray Romano is good, but his character seems kind of autistic. I am not sure why the parents didn’t stay in a hotel. That’s a small point. I never felt much chemistry between Kumail and Emily.
  • Do not believe the Hype

This movie is a joke. The plot is elementary. I cannot believe that it has as high of ratings as it does. True story or not, It's completely juvenile. Don't waste your money.

I have been a fan of Emily and Kumail's podcast for years, so I have heard this story told several times, and I have always been moved by it. I think it is so awesome that they had the opportunity to turn it into a feature film and share it with the world. You will enjoy it.
