"Full Metal Jacket" joins "The Deer Hunter," "Apocalypse Now" and "Platoon" on the frontline of powerful films about the Vietnam War. Cinematic genius Stanley Kubrick ("A Clockwork Orange," "The Shining"), awarded Best Director by the London Film Critics Circle, traces a young Marine's (Matthew Modine, "Pacific Heights," "And the Band Played On") odyssey from dehumanizing boot camp to the bloody terror of the Tet Offensive. Co-starring Vincent D'Onofrio ("The Player"), Arliss Howard ("Tequila Sunrise"), Adam Baldwin ("Serenity"), Dorian Harewood ("Pacific Heights") and adding true grit to the Marines' basic training, a powerhouse performance by real-life former drill instructor R. Lee Ermey (the "Toy Story" movies). Adapted from Gustav Hasford's story "The Short Timers" by Hasford, Michael Herr and Kubrick.

This is a masterclass of a movie, I love it, it really brings home the impact of war. Just to have a small whinge about the price, currently the HD version is too much.(Blu-ray copy 8 quid on most web sites)

  • Stella film in every way

Gripping, superb and a must see ! Little known fact, the training senses on the Marines base were actually filmed at Basingbourn Barracks, near Royston, Cambridgeshire. A British Army barracks only recent closed, and when filming was home to the Queen's Division including the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Only know this as I was based there just two years after this film was released as a young recruit (RRF2). Now in my 40's and seeing the first part of this film takes me straight back to the Barracks... What a place ! In an case, a truly great film.
