Description

"Full Metal Jacket" joins "The Deer Hunter," "Apocalypse Now" and "Platoon" on the frontline of powerful films about the Vietnam War. Cinematic genius Stanley Kubrick ("A Clockwork Orange," "The Shining"), awarded Best Director by the London Film Critics Circle, traces a young Marine's (Matthew Modine, "Pacific Heights," "And the Band Played On") odyssey from dehumanizing boot camp to the bloody terror of the Tet Offensive. Co-starring Vincent D'Onofrio ("The Player"), Arliss Howard ("Tequila Sunrise"), Adam Baldwin ("Serenity"), Dorian Harewood ("Pacific Heights") and adding true grit to the Marines' basic training, a powerhouse performance by real-life former drill instructor R. Lee Ermey (the "Toy Story" movies). Adapted from Gustav Hasford's story "The Short Timers" by Hasford, Michael Herr and Kubrick.

It's by far the best movie I have ever watched and I love the realism to the Vietnam War Parris Island era.

Full metal jacket is a great movie but why spend 10 dollars on it when you can get Netflix for free and watch full metal jacket on that for free.

The movie is great but I also hated it for personal reasons. I was in Army learning to crawl on my belly while we landed a man on the moon. Our DI was a quiet, yet terrifying guy who didn't need to say much, his cold stare in his eyes did his talking. However, when somebody messed up real bad, he would be called out in front of formation and the First Sergeant was just like Erney in this movie. First time he laid into a person, I started laughing out loud and then it was my turn. My experience in Vietnam was more like depicted in Apocalypse Now as I belonged to an air cav unit up in the mountains and we went on patrol by helicopter so I found the second half of the movie interesting due to the difference. Swore I would never return to Vietnam but I did but was armed with knowledge rather than rockets and was amazed at friendliness of the peope including former VC. I ended up making it my 2nd home and this segues into the reason I hated the movie. Living in Vietnam with locals, we are too busy making the most out of each day than to relive the war and I put a lot of bad thughts and memories to rest. A friend who was a VC Commander said to me years ago when we met: "We both did what our government told us to do. The war was a long time ago. Now is the time for peace and understanding." SPOILER ALERT: This movie unleased bad memories and sadness in the scene where the VC sniper lay mortally wounded on the floor and said "Dau qua, dau qua..." Dau = pain. Qua = a lot. Just when I thought I had bad memories at rest, this movie pulls them back out. But it is better to deal with memories than repress them. Otherwise, they will return even stronger.

This film was the spark of my huge interest in the Vietnam war it show the pathological damage that happened to most almost all soldiers and it shows a whole new perspective of the war. Ever since I watched this film I study and learn about the Vietnam war more and more it's a very intense emotional film and one of the best films I've ever seen.

This film is even more intense, disturbing, and realistic than other films about the Vietnam War. It is the definitive statement on this turbulent time in American history. Well written, masterfully directed, and superbly acted, without a doubt my favorite film on the war. I have viewed it multiple times.

One of the most engaging and harrowing war films ever made. Kubrick's best film, in my humble opinion. I believe that Vincent D'Onofrio's turn as the increasingly unhinged Pvt. Leonard "Gomer Pyle" Lawrence is one of the most chilling film performances in the history of cinema.
