Like all of the die-hard Jack fans, I was so ECSTATIC when the series got the reboot! And thank goodness Genndy took a step back from feature films to give Jack the EPIC conclusion he rightfully deserves!! You get it all in this season....kick-butt Samurai action, main character challenges to overcome, quirky villains, a little romantic-comedy, and ......(spoiler).........the fore-told conclusion of Jack's fate!! SO PERFECT!!! I'm still trying to understand why so many people hated the finale; it rattled me to the very core in a way that I haven't felt in a LONG time!! We all loved Ashi and her story, and yes, we all hated it when reality set in, but the lasting hope and inspiration in the end is a breath of FRESH, WELCOME air!! Mr. Tartakovsky, PLEASE do not pay attention to the hate! The crybabies just didn't get the perfect lollipop on a victory cake they whined for! The storytelling craft you and your crew put on was NOTHING short of perfection! As a die-hard Jack fan, I am forever grateful that you set out and gave us the AWESOME conclusion we have BEGGED for!!

The first three (3) episodes of the season were the absolute best and could be considered some of the best episodes in the entire series. After the third episode, the season started taking a different direction that wasn't what I preferred but still enjoyed. The biggest problem after episode three was the pacing, I think there was too much happening within the next seven episodes that made the events feel forced and rushed I.E The Omen (horseman), Jack and Ashi's relationship, Ashi meeting Jack's friends and her reformation etc. I still think the season was doing well, but the biggest grievance I have is the finale. The final episode, in my personal opinion, was handled horribly. It was treated like it was just a regular 22 minute episode despite the ending it had. It really should have been an hour long special and Jack having a final battle with future Aku. I don't want to get too in detail with the finale but there's a big problem near the end of the episode. When Jack got back to the past and killed Aku, Ashi no longer exists, this means that the portal Ashi made SHOULD NOT EXIST. Jack should not be in the past, he should still be in the future because of this. But, then again it's just a cartoon, right? Still, it just hurts to see such an amazing cartoon end on a very low and underwhelming note. I will always keep my love for Samurai Jack and it will always be one of my favorite cartoons of all time, but I cannot excuse the poor performance the finale had. I would rate the season 4 out of 5, but because of the finale being a big disappointment, I cannot rate it higher than a 3.

Most of these reviews where written when the first couple of episodes came out and it started out really strong. Unfortunately, it didn't keep up the pace throughout the season. Jack taking on the daughters of Aku were very rivetting and kept you wondering what will happen to Jack but then it just died off after that. The ending felt rushed in order to fit it into the episode schedule and time slot. Sad that this series had to end on that foot.
  • What you should know before the finale

This was the most suspenseful, heart pumping, dramatic season yet. Jack loses his sword. Later we find out emotional full context of losing sword. The battle against the seven daughters of Haku was one of the most jaw dropping battle sequences I have ever watched in any animated show! (Episode 2 and 3) Jack's mental battles to regain control of his mind pure cinematic brilliance. And they even brought back the Scottsman! (Who got busy and had a couple daughters! LOL) All of this made up to the last episode 5 stars, was totall wanting more. Totally at the edge of my seat. WARNING*****SPOILER The ending, Not what I was expecting at all. Denied fifth star for me. Gave four stars for the entire context of the series being one of the best shows on television ever. Deserved a even better ending then the trash the writers and Gary (author) gave it in its last 10 mins. I will need therapy and much prayers to overcome this disgrace of a heart whenching ending. Consider yourself warned. Full context of what happened thankfully is still being discussed on Youtube videos under "SAMURAI JACK Season 5 Episode 10 EPIC FINALE REVIEW". Really wished Samarui Jack the ending it did not get at the end. :(

I have a lot of respect and admiration for Genndy and his crew. Yes the band is back together so to speak, but to be self aware enough to evolve the show years later while maintaining the heart of the story is very impressive. Technology helps but a lot of work went into this and the attention to detail is so good. I can only imagine the meetings and storyboard sessions and how fun and rigorus they were. Great job guys! I love all of the references and really great throwbacks weaved in here! It would be so epic to voice a character on this show! I'd travel to the studio in a heartbeat if asked! One can dream.

Being a huge fan of Samurai Jack I was over the moon when the news came out that Genndy was finally getting round to wrapping up Jack's quest and this series has certainly been worth the wait. If you're a long-time fan you won't be dissappointed (no matter how Genndy decides Jack will bow out in the final episode); if you're new to Samurai Jack you'll be treated to some of the (if not THE) finest and most entertaining animation ever. It's a shame Mako isn't with us anymore; he seemed to relish the part of Aku but Greg Baldwin does an admiral job of mimicking Mako and I'm glad Genndy took that route instead of a completely new voice. Thanks a million Genndy - an outstanding 5th series!
