  • Like chocolate in chili

I shouldn’t like this show. I’m not generally a fan of funny sci-fi. I like it serious or slapstick, very rarely in-between. Somehow tho, this show really works, against all odds. The basic premise is worn out, the initial characterizations are stereotypical and derivative, the show’s structure is one that we’ve seen a thousand times, but it’s just so satisfying this time. This show is just plain old, romping fun. However, just when you think you’ve had enough of the drug and fart jokes, you get hit with an episode that kicks you right in the feels. Who knows what secret recipe Seth has managed to come up with to make this work as well as it does, but like putting chocolate in chili, it makes you wrinkle your nose and shake your head until you actually take a bite, then you wonder why you haven’t cooked it that way all along.
  • Painful to watch...

Checked out the first couple episodes after reading reviews that said it was the true stylistic successor to TNG. Well, I definitely don’t see that. I’m not sure if the writing is so bad that it makes the acting feel like a bad fan reenactment or if the acting is so bad that it makes it impossible for the writing to save it. Almost purchased the season when it was on sale, but it still wasn’t worth the price.

Fox makes you watch a commercial before the show starts. Remind me why I am paying money for this? Isn’t the whole point of iTunes to be ad free?
  • So bad

I had reallly high hopes for this - sort of Galaxy Quest the series. I watched every episode so far hoping it would find it's stride, but it is just awful. It's not funny at all. It's not even just that the jokes are bad, after episode 1 there are no jokes, but the writing and acting are also crap. Visuals are good but the stories are so hammy that it cant even work as science fiction. Honestly, it is just really really bad star trek the next generation fan fiction with a huge budget.

Every night in my dreams… I see you! I feel you!
  • Best Trek since the original!

Seth MacFarlane is more associated with comedy than serious sci-fi, and the show does have a healthy portion of laughs. However, those expecting a cartoon in space may be surprised to find an earnest homage to the televised treks of old. It's quite a treat, especially given the paywall shielded dumpster fire that the other network has perpetrated on fans! Poignant without being insufferably preachy, it's the show we've been awaiting for quite a while.
  • Well done!

A well acted, well written show. It is a wonderful show. Only slightly spoofy. Just enough for laughs, but doesn't descend into dumb.
