  • A series of two halves

    By hundredand8
The episode format of Seasons 1 and 2 was pretty much the same. The life or world threatening invention of the week with some black comedy thrown in (charred human bodies are a particular favourite); disfunctional relationships as comedy relief; and the long drawn out saga of the artefact in Section 5. At the end the artefact and the evil Beverley were excorcised. Season 3 was broadcast in two blocks of 9 episodes, over the summers of 2008 and 2009. The first half has a new mystery characters story evolving while the rest of the show follows the same format. That story is brought to an interesting and satisfying conclusion in episode 9. There is even a cliff hanger of sorts, with Carter being fired. It feels like the writers wanted to take the show in a new direction, but in episode 10 he gets his job back and nothing else happened. Its worth to remember that there was almost a year between those two episodes, its only weird when watching these two back to back. The second block does not have an underlying mystery story. Instead, the disfunctional relationships between the characters head towards some kind of resolution. There is even an episode with lots of flash backs, and a character from earlier seasons returns to say farewell properly. Eureka appears to be coming to an end, and its possible that the writers were trying to wrap the show up for good. But as everyone knows by now, there is a Season 4 and its very, very different. And finally, what is the best episode of Season 3? I Do Over (Episode 4). If you watch just one, make sure its this. And then watch it again!
